Helping Growing Smiles Stay on Track
Baby teeth play a big role in your child’s developing smile, guiding permanent teeth into place. If a primary tooth is lost too soon—whether from injury or decay—it can lead to shifting teeth, crowding, or misalignment. At Mitten Kids Dentistry, Dr. Brett Kingma provides custom space maintainers to protect your child’s dental development and prevent future orthodontic issues.
The Space Maintainer Process
Consultation & Evaluation
We begin with a comprehensive exam to determine if a space maintainer is needed. Dr. Kingma will check your child’s dental development and explain the best course of action.
Custom Fitting & Placement
If a space maintainer is needed, we’ll create a custom appliance that fits comfortably and securely. Fixed maintainers are bonded in place, while removable ones come with easy care instructions.
Monitoring & Follow-Up
We’ll schedule regular check-ups to ensure the space maintainer is functioning properly. Once the permanent tooth begins to erupt, we’ll safely remove the appliance to allow for natural growth and alignment.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my child need to wear a space maintainer?
The duration varies depending on when the permanent tooth is expected to emerge. Regular dental visits help us monitor progress and determine the right time for removal.
Will my child feel discomfort wearing a space maintainer?
Space maintainers are lightweight and comfortable, with most kids adjusting quickly. There may be an initial adjustment period, but we provide tips to help your child adapt smoothly.
Does my child really need a space maintainer?
If a baby tooth is lost too soon, the surrounding teeth can shift into the open space, leading to crowding and misalignment. A space maintainer ensures proper spacing and alignment until the adult tooth is ready to come in.
